From February 7th until 12th, during ‘Art (fair) Rotterdam’, Hotel Rotterdam offers bed and breakfast in artist’s spaces. Rooms can be booked through www.wakeupinart.nl At what place you stay and what art you wake up in is decided by chance.

In SUPPLY Tom Brown, Henk Gieskens, James Halliwell and Roos Wijma provide for the need of new art. These twenty-somethings are not only exhibiting their art but also that which drives them as artists, their inspiration and view on the meaning of art in our world of transformation. Their art takes us by surprise as it comes alive. As there are finished pieces as well as various studies on display, the focus of the exhibition is dedicated to studio practice. In their studio these reflective artists are rethinking and reusing matter, whether this is the ‘image’ or ‘canvas’ or ‘frame’. SUPPLY is an exhibition that establishes a crossover between London and Rotterdam, creating an exchange, bringing together artists at the point of their final year of Art school in these two cities. Later on this year the show DEMAND is scheduled in London.

Wallgallery is not a commercial enterprise, nor a hobby, but a radical concept to live with art and bring it into the world. It is space for experiencing art inside the privacy of a lofty apartment in The Red Apple in Rotterdam. A rough concrete wall high in the sky defines the room and screens off the outside world. It also offers back-cover for the panoramic views and can hold an experimental vision. Every season an exchange of art -or whatever idea transformed into reality- takes place in an open minded environment. Each presentation aims at turning views into vision.

Basel-Rotterdam Rotterdam-Basel

On December 15th RAIR presented the publication ‘Basel-Rotterdam Rotterdam-Basel’ in Wallgallery, a very suitable location since the Rhine that connects the two cities is most prominently part of the view. Although the Basel crowd was lacking the presentation was very lively. Content was further provided by Gerard Drosterij. Speeching in English may sound a bit overdone in a predominantly Dutch crowd but is the consequence of opening up for worldwide exchange.

Fersteinn from Iceland brought us a clear bold construction of tones and notes in space. Their sound seems to come from a completely crushed partiture consisting of pure elements that are ordered in a very uncommon way. Good practise for the ears!

Fersteinn is a quartet of multi-instrumentalists that performs music by composer Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson. The music focuses on elastic rhythms, that are not easily confined to a grid. The musicians read the music from a score, but the score consists of moving images on a computer screen. This is done in order to communicate rhythms not easily notated. The music mostly consists of hockets where each sound is like one letter in a word. With flutes or recorder, plucked string instruments, duck calls and winds or brass, various types of rhythmical sound textures are conveyed. Some parts of the music might resemble animal sounds or the rhythm of animal movements.

To quote the composer: “By intently focusing on small differences, both in rhythm and pitch, the ear gets tuned to a microscopic mode of listening. When things then open up, a new sense of variety is gained.”

For this particular concert DE PLAYER choose to cooperate with Wallgallery, its private situation fits perfectly for this kind of stripped chamber (anti-)music. DE PLAYER is more and more cooperating with other organisations to find just the right context for their program.

Unstable Situations 02/10/11 – 16/12/11

In Unstable Situations freedom is not just another word for nothing left to loose but meaning is gained from the high and low end of this state of mind. Although people in time of transformation want to hold on to what they know the artists that build the two experimental installations in Wallgallery show instability is essential to become aware of the future.

Upper Station claims the entrance; just as you have been lifted by the elevator you enter a narrow but airy space that changes your perspective dramatically. The view is focussed on a suggestive lift off situation that is characteristic of the painted imagination of Eveline Visser. Her high end vision guides the spectator into a new world of fantasy.

In contrast De polen draaien om! (Poles are turning!) invites you inside to become a voyeur of modern high-rise life. Everyday moments that take place simultaneously are meticulously envisioned in paper. Johan Kleinjan spots the beauty of life in states of banality. His low end fascination for awkward situations takes us beyond shame and may open up possibilities to escape social conventions.
